Let me introduce myself

  • Hi, I’m Tom! I’m a professional ecologist and botanist based in Stourport-on-Severn. I’m also joint BSBI Vice-county Recorder for Worcestershire.
  • I have a deep love for the natural world (especially plants), and hold an MSc in Biological Recording and Ecological Monitoring.

My background

  • My career has ranged from commercial consultancy to eNGOs and even horticulture.
  • It has included exciting projects such as baseline surveys to inform beaver reintroductions, and long-term botanical monitoring of fixed quadrats in the Welsh uplands to inform agri-environment schemes.
  • I’m also well-versed UKHab surveys, condition assessments and the reporting requirements to quantify Biodiversity Net Gain.

I have delivered botanical training for

  • Ecological consultants
  • Environmental NGOs
  • Local authorities on topics such as:
  • Species identification, habitat classification (UKHab, NVC), indicator species and recognising priority habitats.

My certifications include

  • First-class MSc in the esteemed ‘Biological Recording & Ecological Monitoring’ course
  • Joint BSBI Vice-county Recorder for Worcestershire
  • Associate Member of CIEEM
  • FISC Level 4 (2023)

  • River Condition Assessment certificate (2023)
  • Full UK driving licence & access to vehicle

Where you can find me…

  • In a field somewhere! Kidding… or am I?
  • On my blog – I’ve always been a believer in sharing knowledge as widely as possible, so keep an eye out for tips and ID tricks over there.
  • I also post frequently on LinkedIn.
  • I keep track of my photographs of interesting plants over on iNaturalist and submit my notable records to the BSBI database.
